Following the example of the previous three Bookbinding Conferences in Torun, during this year’s 4th Conference, each of its participants will receive a commemorative graphics. It shows an angel in Gothic style, holding the coat of arms of Torun in one hand and a typical Gothic book binding with fittings in the other. In the intention of the conference organizers and the creator of the work, this motifis to be a symbol of the city’s connection with the idea of popularizing knowledge about old bookbindings. It is worth emphasizing that the heraldic convention of this image refers to the centuries-old tradition of the coat of arms of the city of Torun, often shown in the hands of an „angel-holder” or „shield-holder” (this tradition has survived to this day).
The author of the graphics – as in 2014, 2016 and 2018 – is an outstanding graphic designer and academic teacher, prof. Piotr Gojowy, known, among others, from award-winning bookplates and other so-called small graphic forms. In this photo report, we present the finalization of the creative process of this etching finished in the aquatint technique.
